On March 13, the Rutgers School of Nursing–Camden welcomes Dr. Richard Jermyn, a professor with the Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine, who will present “Best Practices in Opioid Treatment and Management,” a lecture designed to educate healthcare providers across disciplines to better address gaps in training and education on addiction, and increase awareness about the lingering opioid epidemic in the United States.
Dr. Jermyn, director of the Neuromusculoskeletal Institute at Rowan, is a pioneer in treatment, education, and research in the field of pain management and addiction medicine.
At the end of 2018, more than 3,000 people died of drug overdoses in New Jersey, the largest year-end total according to state data, with deaths largely due to the opioid crisis. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, every day, more than 130 people in the United States die after overdosing on opioids and the Centers for Disease Control report the total economic burden of prescription opioid misuse in the United States is $78.5 billion a year, including the costs of healthcare, lost productivity, addiction treatment, and criminal justice involvement.
