Biography

Dr. Joseph D. Tariman is an Associate Professor and Associate Dean for Clinical Innovation and EBP at Rutgers University-Camden. He has held academic leadership positions as Associate Director for the Doctor of Nursing Practice Program in the School of Nursing and Vice-Chair of the IRB at DePaul University in Chicago, IL.

Prior to joining DePaul University in 2014, Dr. Tariman has established a unique blend of clinician and researcher roles beginning in 2002, performing a dual role as a Board-Certified Adult Nurse Practitioner and as a myeloma research team member at Northwestern University in Chicago, IL for more than a decade.

Dr. Tariman's passion for myeloma patient care is evident through his extensive publications and numerous lectures and presentations on myeloma-related topics including quality of life issues, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, clinical drug trials, novel therapies, management of treatment-related side effects, cancer survivorship, health maintenance, cancer treatment decision-making, and treatment outcomes measurement. His most recent research work helps delineate the role of the oncology nurse during the shared decision-making (SDM) process for cancer treatment decisions.

Subsequently, he has developed a valid and reliable tool designed to measure the nurses' role competency during the SDM process, which is now adapted in oncology clinics to identify aspects of SDM needing more education and training effort to increase the oncology nurses' role competency on SDM. His most recent scholarly work includes the development of an integrated Patient Decision Aid for patients with myeloma (Myeloma-PDA). He is the editor and author of the only myeloma book for nurses, which is now on its third edition.
