Screening methods for depression that take context and culture into consideration could be more effective in uncovering clinical depression in African American mothers, according to a study led by a Rutgers University‒Camden nursing professor.
For mothers suffering from depression and living in poverty, getting help is no easy matter. “A lot of them have no way of dealing with mental and emotional problems,” said Rahshida Atkins, an assistant professor in the Rutgers School of Nursing–Camden.

The appointment of Donna Nickitas, a noted health policy scholar and nursing educator, as the dean of the Rutgers School of Nursing–Camden is announced by Phoebe Haddon, chancellor of Rutgers University–Camden.
The appointment becomes effective on July 1. As dean, Nickitas will lead the growth of the Rutgers School of Nursing–Camden, which was approved by the Rutgers Board of Governors on June 14, 2011.
